This piece features vesuvianite, coyote wrist bone, and howlite beading, on a pair of vintage squared snake chains, with vintage clasp. This one is fairly long, and measures 27.25” long.
One of the initial and biggest inspirations for this collection came from an evening spent researching gorgets (gore-dzjet), a once functional piece of armor in medieval times, which covered the gorge, aka the throat. With the advent of firearms and other weapons of war that rendered full armor clunky and obsolete, the gorget became a symbol of its former function, and a representation of rank, instead. Native Americans adopted them from British and American soldiers, taking them from officers they’d killed in battle, and also making their own from leather, wood, and stone. They are a fascinating bit of warfare, and a symbol of power we need for the months ahead.
